1 Let it go. Seriously, let it go
The modern world is a ravenous devourer of trends: one day everyone’s talking about you, and the next it’s like you’ve vanished from the face of the earth. And considering that nobody is better adapted to the modern world than children, it makes sense for this phenomenon to be especially prevalent among them. For example: in 2008, every kid would’ve killed for a Ben 10 figure, but just try giving them one now and you’ll see where it ends up. It’s a fact: the Woody/Buzz Lightyear drama is more in vogue than ever.
2 We wish you a Merry Crisis
Eating, drinking, giving gifts… let’s not kid ourselves: Christmas is expensive. Just like life itself, really. Which is why the event that most defined the past decade was the financial crisis. But, just as we carry on with our lives, we carry on celebrating Christmas, but perhaps with a few less shepherds in the Nativity scene. Luckily, nothing lasts forever, and this too shall pass, so little by little we’ve stepped up to allegro: now we’re spending more on sportswear and less on poker. So, even though Baqueira is yet to recover, embracing the crescendo may lead to an open ending: a bonanza? Another bubble? Only time—and data—will tell.
3 Hipster Bells
Santa Claus with thick-rimmed glasses, vintage jumpers, vegan Christmas treats… no, even Christmas hasn’t escaped hipster fashion, the alternative movement that went mainstream after consuming itself. The monster that we were all guilty of feeding began to set our cultural and aesthetic rhythm about eight years ago, and seemed to reach its peak in 2015. The data doesn’t lie: our interest in urban gardens, antique cameras and all things DIY has been on the decline ever since. Will the hipster melody eventually fade to silence? From our point of view, and with all due respect to moustaches, fixies and infinity-sign tattoos: we hope it does.
4 New Year’s Re-Re-Resolution Song
New year, new life. That’s where the well-intentioned resolutions come into play: “Okay, let’s get serious, this year I’m going to quit X, start Y and learn to Z.” And it’s all very admirable, don’t get me wrong. The problem is that intent isn’t always what matters, and when the moment of truth arrives, the data is devastating: the same resolutions are remade year after year, which means that they’re never being fulfilled. The result? A song with a repetitive beat, as repetitive as our failure. Because resolutions come and go, but in the end, as Julio Iglesias used to say: la vida sigue igual (life remains the same).
